ARLINGTON
VS
THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC

Working as the assistant to the editor of YourArlington.com, I spent 10 months learning about how the town of Arlington, MA is impacted by the nation's opioid crisis.

This four part series addresses this community's plans to utilize millions of dollars received from the National Opioid Settlements in order to reduce the number of residents abusing substances.

PART I

"Drug crisis hits home. How town's outreach began to address fatalities."

An introduction of the Arlington Outreach Initiative; a police assisted recovery program which promotes the idea that drug abuse is a mental health crisis as opposed to strictly a criminal one.

PART II

"Tommy Caccavaro: Becoming clean and sober, and helping others do the same"

An in depth profile about the town of Arlington's recovery coach, Tommy Caccavaro, about his journey to sobriety from opiate addiction and how he uses his experiences to help others join him in recovery.

PART III

"Elizabeth Wall: Twice-bereaved, resolute, carrying on."

The story of a mother who lost her two eldest sons to fatal drug overdoses within the span of just four months; how she shares this tragedy to help prevent other parents from experiencing the same loss.

PART IV

"A marathon, not a sprint: How the town is spending opioid settlement funds."

An explanation of the National Opioid settlements and how the town of Arlington plans to spend the money on resources to protect its residents.
